Epilogue

Unraveling the mess took all weekend. After several meetings with the police, Lorelei learned that Daphne had dropped her husband off at home and then came to finish off Mr. Bath. The police caught her as she was pulling into her driveway. Mr. Blevins was safe, if deeply upset. Lorelei felt terrible for him and wrote up a gift card to give to him. Coffee wasn’t much, but hopefully it would help a little.

Toby had vanished during all of the chaos, and after Lorelei told Mr. Bath what he had confessed to, he added Toby’s string of thefts to the call they made to the police, but they couldn’t find him anywhere. She hated the fact that he had slipped away but knew there wasn’t anything she could do. She wasn’t a detective or investigator. She was just a woman with a cat.

There was one thing she could do to help make a bad situation better. A small stack of applications was waiting for her when she got into the coffee shop on Saturday morning. The sticky note on top read, These four were my favorite applicants. I’m excited to see who you choose! The interview notes are written on the backs.

When she saw Norah’s name on one of the applications, she smiled. After everything that had happened, it felt unimaginably good to sit down with her cell phone during her break and dial the number on the application.

“Hello?”

“Hello, Norah? This is Lorelei French, at the French Roast.”

“Oh, hi. I’m so glad to hear back from you.”

“I’m glad to be calling you,” Lorelei said, smiling. “We’re looking forward to having you on the team. When can you start?”

The very best part of her weekend was when Latte disappeared right before closing that day and Lorelei spotted her following behind a man in his twenties downtown. Instead of joining the cat in her game of cat and mouse, all she had to do was pick up her cell phone and dial the number of a man who owed her about a thousand years’ worth of favors. Three hours later, Mr. Bath showed up at her house carrying a proud cat. Latte’s dry coat and relaxed purr of greeting were completely opposite to Mr. Bath’s drenched and disgruntled appearance.

“That guy fell into a river,” he sputtered. “A river! I almost drowned myself getting to him.”

“But he’s okay?”

“Yes,” he said grudgingly.

“Then you did good. Congratulations, Mr. Bath. You saved a life today. Welcome to the club. Our president collects dues in catnip and canned salmon.”

“That cat is going to drive us both to an early grave,” he said, shaking his head, though his expression softened as he handed the content feline over.

“No,” Lorelei said, looking down at Latte, who lay relaxed and purring in her arms. “Very much the opposite of that, in fact.”
